My first solo trip took me to the Rhodope Mountains in southern Bulgaria for a week. I travelled by public bus to remote mountain villages, from where I explored the surrounding area exclusively on foot.
As many areas were virtually inaccessible without a car, I focused on what lay directly outside my accommodation. Rather than trying to visit as many places as possible, I spent a lot of time in the species-rich mountain meadows and the surrounding forests. Alongside a few encounters with roe deer and a red fox, this resulted above all in numerous macro photographs of the diverse flora and insect life.
A special moment was my encounter with a young grey woodpecker, which watched me curiously for a few minutes whilst I was out walking, before following its parents’ calls and disappearing into the forest.
The trip was characterised by long walks, tranquil landscapes and the experience of hardly encountering anyone else for days on end. The photographs shown here offer a first glimpse into this project.
